In het Porem van Mokum omdat zij flamboyant en werelds is als een Shaffy, ondanks haar leeftijd. Haar deur staat altijd open, voor de buurt en meer. Tenminste, als ze thuis is. Want ze zingt in het Amsterdams smartlappenkoor en gaat vaak op pad. Regelmatig tot diep in de nacht. Mondain, origineel, innemend en extravert. Maar ook praktisch. Mensen kennen is voor haar een lust. Ze leidt een enerverend leven waar ze nog lang niet genoeg van heeft.

I
Als kind, bij mijn vader in de bakkerswinkel, was ik altijd al tussen de mensen. Hier in Amsterdam, waar mijn Prins op het Witte Paard me bracht, ging het net zo. Ik heb snel mensen om me heen verzameld. Dat heb ik ooit ontdekt en daar maak ik gebruik van. Een druk leven viel mij ten deel. Man in de advocatuur, overal gewoond, hard meegewerkt, kinderen. Na mijn scheiding kon ik een keurig huisje krijgen in Zeist. Nou, ik moest er niet aan dénken. Binnen de kortste keren zat ik op een piepklein kamertje aan het Surinameplein in mijn geliefde Mokum. Als sociaal dier ben ik erg bezig in allerlei circuits, bridge, zang, zwemmen, fietsen, schaatsen en pro deo wat kleine projecten . Maar ik vind het ook heerlijk om uit te gaan en te feesten. Ook hier bij mij thuis. Dan ziet het hier zwart van de mensen.

Je moet niet alleen voor jezelf leven. Ik heb onder andere in de sociale advocatuur gewerkt, veel met buitenlanders, dan was ik vaak een halve sociaal werkster. Dat ging vanzelf. Als ze wat nodig hadden, dan ging ik daar voor zorgen. Ik verzamel nog steeds kleding, dat gaat dan ergens heen waar ze het hard nodig hebben, naar Roemenië of zo. Kijk, ik heb niet gestudeerd, maar ik heb wel een duidelijke kijk op het leven en ben zeer praktisch. Ik heb met succes verschillende zaken helpen opzetten. En als er iets voor iemand gedaan moet worden, dan ga ik daar op af. Mijn zoon en vriendin hebben een goede documentaire gemaakt over Guatemala en dan zorg ik dat er een zaal wordt gehuurd om hem daar te vertonen.

Ik ben altijd graag in steden geweest. Berlijn, Dortmund, Essen, daar woonde mijn familie, daar was het fijn. En vanuit Lochem ging je als meisje feesten in Arnhem. Dus toen ik in 1959 met mijn aanstaande man naar Amsterdam trok was dat helemaal geweldig. Ik was twintig, woonde in een meisjestehuis aan de Herengracht. Rondom gebeurde het allemaal en dat blijft zo in Amsterdam. Ben vaak in de binnenstad te vinden, het Spui, de Nieuwmarkt, theaters, tentoonstellingen, feesten. Ik houd van grote steden, zoals Barcelona, daar kom ik regelmatig. Ik reis veel en heb dus een stukje van de wereld in mijn hoofd, maar ik ben en blijf verliefd op Amsterdam.

Taking part in the Face of Amsterdam because: she is as flamboyant and worldly as Dutch chansonniere Ramses Shaffy, in spite of her age. Her front door is always open, for friends, neighbours and many others. At least, when she is at home. Because she sings in the Amsterdams smartlappen choir which sings traditional Amsterdam songs and she is often away. Usually until late at night. Worldly, original, charismatic and extravert. But practical at the same time. She loves getting to know people. She has an energetic lifestyle, and isn’t about to change it for some time yet.

I
As a child, I was always surrounded by people in my father’s bakers shop. It was the same here in Amsterdam, where my prince in shining armour brought me. I soon gathered a bunch of people around me. It’s something I had discovered about myself and I make use of it. My life has been very busy. My husband was a lawyer, we lived all over the place, worked hard, had children. After we divorced, I could have taken a nice house in the town of Zeist. But I wouldn’t have it. Before I knew it I was back in my beloved Amsterdam in a tiny room on the Surinam Square. I’m a social animal and because of that I am involved in all kinds of circles, playing bridge, singing, swimming, cycling, skating and other small voluntary projects. But I also love to go out and party. I even hold them here at home. When I do that it’s full of people here.

You shouldn’t just live for yourself. I used to work as a social lawyer, working with many foreigners, when I did that I acted as a social worker too half of the time. That happens without you realising it. When they needed something, then I would take care of it. I still collect clothing, which goes to people who really need it, to Romania or somewhere like that. See, I never went to university, but I do have a clear views on life and I am very practical. I have helped set up various successful businesses. And if someone needs something, I’ll go out and get it. My son and his girlfriend made a good documentary about Guatemala and I was the one that organised the showing of the film.

I have always loved visiting cities. Berlin, Dortmund, Essen, that’s where my family lived, and it was nice to be there. As a girl, I used to go to parties in Arnhem. So when I moved to Amsterdam in 1959 with my future husband; that was great. I was twenty, lived in a home for girls on the Heren Canal. Things were going on all around us, and it still does in Amsterdam. You can often find me in the city centre, the Spui, the Nieuw Market, theatres, exhibitions, parties. I love big cities, like Barcelona, I go there regularly. I travel a lot and so I have a bit of the world in my head. But I am still in love with Amsterdam.
